From Turnaround to Growth: How Just Cuts Franchise Owner Timothy Belcher Built a Thriving Multi-Salon Business

Owning three Just Cuts salons across New Zealand, franchise owner Timothy Belcheris proving that with the right systems, leadership and support, sustainable growth, and lifestyle flexibility, are well within reach.

When Timothy Belcher joined the Just Cuts network in April 2023, he was ready to take the next step into business ownership. Less than two years later, that decision has seen him successfully acquire and grow three Just Cuts salons in Whanganui, New Plymouth and Invercargill, each demonstrating strong performance and ongoing growth.

A smart first step into business ownership

Timothy’s move into franchising followed careful consideration and advice from a trusted friend.

“I’d been talking with a mate about buying a business, and he recommended franchising as a smart first major purchase,” Timothysays. “With a reputable brand like Just Cuts, it felt like a lower-risk way to learn every aspect of running a business, while still having strong systems and support behind me.”

With 30 years of turnaround and operational management experience, and his wife Laney bringing over 20 years of hairdressing expertise, Just Cuts provided the ideal platform to combine their strengths and build something sustainable.

Transforming struggling salons into success stories

One of Timothy’s proudest achievements has been revitalising underperforming salons and turning them into profitable, growing businesses.

“When we took on the Whanganui salon, it was facing closure,” he explains. “We were able to stabilise it, rebuild the team and bring it back to life.”

That success led to the acquisition of another salon that had been effectively abandoned and required intensive focus. Within the first three months, the salon experienced explosive growth, which has continued steadily since.

Most recently, Timothy and Laney took on Just Cuts’ southern-most salon in Invercargill, where they are already seeing consistent month-on-month growth.

Freedom, flexibility and control

For Timothy, one of the greatest benefits of being a Just Cuts franchise owner is the balance between challenge, independence and lifestyle flexibility.

“I love the challenge, and hairdressing has always been Laney’s passion,” he says. “Together, being franchise owners gives us a level of freedom and independence that traditional businesses don’t always allow.”

Thanks to Just Cuts’ proven systems and technology, Timothy can manage multiple salons remotely:

  • Rostering from the Sunshine Coast

  • Point-of-sale troubleshooting from the Barossa

  • Stock ordering while in Bali

  • Delivering training sessions across all three salons remotely

“It’s incredibly empowering to be able to run the business effectively from anywhere.”

Building long-term security

Owning a Just Cuts franchise has shifted Timothy’s focus from short-term freedom to long-term stability and growth.

“With strong systems and the right people in place, we have real control,” he says. “We can step in where needed without being tied to the salon every day, which has been key to maintaining balance while still growing the business.”

Why Just Cuts?

For Timothy, the value of the Just Cuts franchise model is clear.

“The model is tried and true and built around strong systems,” he explains. “Instead of starting from scratch, we were able to focus our energy on leadership, people and execution,  knowing the foundations were already proven.”

Timothy Belcher’s journey highlights what’s possible with Just Cuts franchise ownership: scalability, lifestyle flexibility, strong support and long-term security, all backed by a globally recognised brand.
